Migrations brings together approximately 150 diptychs combining landscape photographs and handwritten texts, created in collaboration with 55 exiled individuals. The project was developed through a series of workshops held in nine French cities between 2020 and 2025. Each workshop was organized in partnership with an art center from the Diaganole network and supported by the image education program Entre les images.
During the workshops, participants—who had recently arrived in the host territory—identified places within the city that shaped their arrival, that they inhabit on a daily basis, that they are attached to, or that, for them, embody France. Following a period of collective exploration, the landscapes were photographed using an 8×10 large-format camera, in dialogue with Alexandre Guirkinger. Each participant then produced contact prints of their images and wrote an accompanying caption in their native language. At the core of this project lies the idea that the notion of landscape involves a dual movement: representation and appropriation. The deliberate act of producing images of a territory becomes a means of understanding it and making it one’s own. In this sense, moving through a landscape is already a way of creating it.
